There are few celebrity couples that we all look up to more than our nation’s first couple, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. They project the perfect example of what many want out of love and marriage and we all want to know how they’ve made their relationship last for more than two decades. Michelle is finally spilling their secrets to success on keeping their marriage alive.
In an interview in the November issue of Good Housekeeping, Michelle talks about the struggle to maintain the balance between President Obama’s demanding role and keeping up with their marriage.
“There’s nothing that prepares you for this life,” Michelle explains. “And we’re the only two people who really understand it.”
Michelle explained that she and Obama keep honest communication going between each other and they also “stay connected” by exercising together.
“We work out together every day,” she says. “I usually get up to the gym a little before he does, because I start my day a bit earlier — [I have] hair, makeup, things that he doesn’t have to do. I continue to remind him of that. He usually gets up there when I’m halfway through, so we spend the morning checking in, watching SportsCenter.”
For the Obamas, it’s all about stealing time to be with each other and that includes going out to “catch a movie together, [or] have a quiet dinner.”
Another thing that also keeps them connected is having dinner as a family every night and praying together at every meal.
“Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. if it means he has to go back and work afterward, he’ll do it,” Michelle explains. “We pray at every meal. Our prayer — the kids usually say it — is, ‘Thank you, Lord, for the delicious food. Thank you for our friends and family and everything we have. Hope we all live long and strong. Amen.’ ”
