Mother sues after toddler finds contaminated condom

Mother Suing Daycare Where Child Chewed On Condom

A Florida mother is taking action today after her 3-year-old daughter was exposed to a sexually transmitted disease at her local daycare. Tiesha Sanders of Jacksonville says her toddler was at a Head Start program run by the Jacksonville Urban League when she noticed her pick up something on the playground and put it into her mouth. “I lift [sic] up my head and I saw her put something in her mouth and I was like, ‘get that out of your mouth!’ And someone said see what she had in her mouth and that’s when I found out she had a condom in her mouth,” explained Sanders to Jacksonville’s Channel 4.

Sanders says she then called the Centers for Disease Control and took the child to the emergency room where the condom was tested. “The first test was the condom and it tested positive for a form of gonorrhea,” said Sanders’ attorney Richard Alexander to Channel 4. “It’s bad enough you hear the first part that she had this in her mouth and then you hear that it tests positive for gonorrhea, and it’s like, it’s just a nightmare for a parent,” he said.

Sanders contends that she’s filing a lawsuit against the Jacksonville Urban League to protect other children from having similar experiences. “I just really didn’t want that to happen to my baby,” said Sanders. “If it happens to my daughter, it can happen to yours.” Sanders’ daughter tested negative for gonorrhea after the December 2011 incident, but is continuing to be tested for diseases that can take up to a year to emerge including HIV. -danielle canada
