Nelson Mandela hospitalized

Former South African president Nelson Mandela was hospitalized on Saturday.

The office of South African president President Jacob Zuma released a terse statement surrounding Mandela’s health:

“Former President Mandela will receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age. President Zuma assures all that Madiba is doing well and there is no cause for alarm.”

Note: Madiba is Nelson Mandela’s tribal name.


In 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first Black president. He stood against the racist policies of Apartheid and sacrificed his life and family to bring about justice for disenfranchised South African people. Now retired, heads of state visit Mandela in his ancestral home of Qunu, located in the Eastern Cape province.

Mandela is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a statue in his honor sits opposite the British parliament.
