#4 “I Used to Love H.E.R.” – Common
Hip hop nostalgia is old hat in 2012, but in 1994, it was still a relatively young genre. Nonetheless, thoughtful Chicago emcee Common (then known as “Common Sense”) gave the genre and culture its first pensive look at its past, present and future with this classic cut. Though it led to some animosity with Ice Cube, the song’s examination of the industry and culture remains relevant today.
