‘Day of History’

In 2010, Gov. Pat Quinn, (Dem.) called the occasion a  “day of history,” when he signed legislation to legalize civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.

The legislation extended significant protection under the law for gay and lesbian couples, including the right to inherit a partner’s property and/or decide the course of medical treatment.

“We believe in civil rights and we believe in civil unions,” Quinn said.
