Hip-hop soul pioneer
At the dawn of the 1990s, New Jack Swing was dominating R&B. As the decade progressed, that sound eventually evolved into hip-hop soul. And sitting at the forefront of that evolution was Aaliyah. Alongside her early mentor, singer-songwriter R. Kelly, as well as contemporaries like Jodeci and Mary J. Blige, the teenager from Detroit was instrumental in the 1993-1994 emergence of a progressive musical movement.
