Let’s face it, the Academy Awards have a history of ignoring black films and black actors who turned in noteworthy performances. Spike Lee’s Malcom X, Do The Right Thing and John Singleton’s Boys N The Hood all deserved Oscar Awards, but were snubbed.
But while yearly awards can provide insight on how a project faired in 12 months, it’s better for a film to be widely appreciated years after its release.
There are several black films that never had a chance at winning an Oscar, but remain cult classics in the black community.
