Train travel: Top 5 American destinations via the railroad
Trains are making a huge comeback. The locomotive travel industry is witnessing a huge boom as unpredictable gas prices and inhospitable airlines give way to old-fashioned yet much loved trains.
Train journeys are a beautiful experience and America provides the perfect backdrop for it. Here are the top five locomotives in America. Board any one and you will experience the most scenic, naturally beautiful landscapes that the country has to offer.
Amtrak’s Texas Eagle
This ride takes you right through America’s heartland. Starting at Chicago, Amtrak’s Texas Eagle takes you through Mississippi, crossing at St. Louis, across Arkansas and into eastern Texas. The ride continues through Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin all the way through to San Antonio. This crash course in American geography then connects to the Sunset Limited in San Antonio. Hop on to the Sunset Limited to go west along the U.S.-Mexican border to El Paso, Tucson and finally Arizona. Phew!
Amtrak’s Empire Service
This happens to be one of the country’s oldest train routes, and it is still one of the best. Amtrak’s Empire Service will pick you up in New York, taking you up the Hudson Valley River past West Point, through the towns straight from the nightmares of the writer Washington Irving. The Empire Service goes all the way to Albany-Rensselaer. Here you can choose to go west to Buffalo and ultimately Niagara Falls and Toronto or you can choose to turn North on the Adirondack and go all the way to Montreal. Life’s full of possibilities when you are on a train.
