Any discussion on achievements in the sport of basketball has to highlight the prowess of players on the field, but should not neglect the contributions of great African American coaches on the sideline, as well. A number of teams have had their championship dreams seen to fruition due to the expert and intuitive leadership of black coaches. Some recipients of the coach of the year award are Sam Mitchell (of the Toronto Raptors), who won the prestigious award for the 2006-2007 season.
