Tom Potter, the former mayor and police chief of Portland, Ore., gained fame and praise after he marched in his police uniform in the city’s gay pride parade to show his support for his daughter, Katie, who is a lesbian. Potter has also spoken in favor of gay marriage, especially for his daughter, who is in a relationship with one of his former officers.
