Kevin Ware’s broken leg: Athletes who lose scholarships, get stuck with medical bills

Joseph Agnew was also a scholarship winner to Rice University in Houston, out of high school. But recurring ankle and shoulder injuries left him playing sparingly when there was a coaching change. He had his scholarship revoked. Agnew had to hire a lawyer and sue the institution to get his scholarship right back. He won. However, the sophomore only had his junior year paid as a result of winning the lawsuit. He had to pay his own way his senior year. Some schools have begun to offer multi-year scholarships.

Louisville opposed this measure, which is why Ware’s scholarship is in jeopardy, despite all the nice, warm words of concern and support from head coach Rick Pitino.
