The issue of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in, well, nearly every aspect of American life has been a hot button issue all over the nation for the past few weeks as the Supreme Court reviews the constitutionality of Prop 8 and DOMA (Defense of Marige Act). Now, Snoop Lion has weighed in on the matter and claims that although other fields may accept homosexuality, hip-hop may never do the same.
During a recent interview with The Guardian, Snoop spoke about Frank Ocean’s pivotal coming out letter last summer and explained that the LGBT community may be more accepted in the world of singing, hip-hop may never jump on the LGBT bandwagon.
“Frank Ocean ain’t no rapper. He’s a singer. It’s acceptable in the singing world but in the rap world I don’t know if it will ever be acceptable because rap is so masculine. It’s like a football team. You can’t be in a locker room full of motherfucking tough-a– dudes, then all of a sudden say, ‘Hey, man, I like you.’ You know, that’s going to be tough.”
Despite Snoop’s bleak observation of hip-hop’s ability to accept anything outside of the hyper-masculine, the rap legend, who recently spoke in support of same-sex marriage, maintained that he is accepting of gay and bisexual people.
“I don’t have a problem with gay people. I got some gay homies.” He looks round the room and laughs. “Yeah, for real. People who were gay used to get beat up. It was cool to beat up on gay people back then. Now they are accepted, not classified. They just went through the some of same things we went through as black.”
Well, it’s great that Snoop is supportive of gay marriage but we hope he’s wrong about hip-hop and the LGBT community. Luckily, there are others in hip-hop who disagree with him. Check them out below. – nicholas robinson
