France made history on Tuesday when the nation decided to legalize same-sex marriage amid an intense national debate about the country’s conservatism roots versus its move towards cultural progress. Soon after the marriage equality bill was passed the streets of Paris erupted in violence, as protestors of the bill engaged in brawls with police. Now, those same protestors have taken their fight to web and are demanding that the LGBT citizens of France be put to death.
According to the Huffington Post, shortly after the riots erupted, menacing hashtags such as #MortAuxGay (“death to gays”) and #ilfauttuerleshomosexuels (“we must kill all gays”) began showing up on Twitter.
AmericaBlog took a screenshots of France’s trending hashtag and showed that #MortAuxGay was, at one point, the fifth most tweeted hashtag in the nation.
This is just the latest in a series of homophobic attacks from conservative Frenchman. Besides violent protests, attacks on gay couples have risen in weeks, and pro-gay marriage legislators have been receiving death threats over their stance on the issue.
Although it’s quite unfortunate that some of France’s citizens are resorting to threats and violence to preserve the nation’s homophobic and conservative existence, there is still reason to rejoice as France has now become the 14th nation to legalize same-sex marriage and it’s gay citizens may be able to marry as soon as June. Hopefully, France will continue to fight against the violence and push towards full equality for its LGBT citizens.
