Well, for us, the answer is a resounding YES!
And by the looks of spring 2013 runways, the world’s top designers agree with us.
Fact of the matter is that black isn’t everyone’s color. In fact, women seldom look good in it after 35. In the words of the great Elsie de Wolfe, it is all about, “Suitability, suitability, suitability.” And there are just so many factors that contribute to the appropriateness of a black dress. Cut, length, neckline, material, finish … if one of these variables goes wrong, the little black dress might just end up looking like something borrowed or dug out from grandma’s closet, or you may end looking like an ’80s high class call girl.
Some of our favorite style experts Tim Gunn and Amanda Brooks don’t include the LBD in their list of wardrobe essentials. So we are thinking the LBD is overrated!
So What Are Your Other Options?
If you are wondering about the one absolutely must have dress, we say it should be one that effectively reflects your personality. It doesn’t necessarily have to be black. If you are a dancing peacock at heart, let it shine through with your wardrobe choices. There are plenty of dresses out there, in every cut, color and size imaginable. So, why limit yourself with boring black?
This year, black is paired with plaid and white on the runways. If you are not feeling this trend, choose a colorful dress in a timeless design that goes well with your persona. Or just go vintage. Experiment with fabrics, paints, and materials.
And besides black has become the new color of choice for uniforms, from waiters to escorts and staff. You don’t want people to stop and ask you for cocktails and directions, do you? Take our advice, avoid the LBD this season.
