For just a while, the Strokes were the hottest new band in the world. Armed with a sophisticated-hipster image and a boat-load of catchy, riff-driven songs, the New York City natives’ sound reached back to both the protopunk of the Stooges and the CBGBs swagger of bands like Television and kick-started the short-lived garage rock revival.
