Producer and rapper Dat Guy talks Hip Hop Sex Shop and music icons

dat guyDo you most often actively seek inspiration or does it find you? Or is there a combination of the two?
I believe it finds me. You never know where inspiration comes from. Sometimes it just happens.

What led you to art in general and to your art form(s) in particular?
It’s in my blood. I always love the sound of music. Around age 12 I started taking music serious.

In addition to mastering their art, what other skill sets to you recommend that artists develop if they want to be successful?
You have to learn business period. Master that and you will be OK with anything you set your mind too.

How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?
I try to stay in my own lane and not worry about the lead just make good music.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?
I like to plan ahead of time and set a goal. I hate being last minute.

Who do you consider to be your peers in your field? Who do you see/use as examples for you to emulate?
I have a lot of friends in the industry from artists, CEOs, actors, to deejays who are my friends in this game. My manager is like my brother – we’re Frick and Frack.

Name two of your top role models: one in the art world and one from outside of it.
God, I don’t really have no role models. I love my mom [laughs].

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself.
City of Gods (movie), 48 Laws of Power (book) and Decoded (book).

What role does art have in the community? What role would you like to see art play in the community?
It plays a major part in the community. For some, it’s a way out, and a way to escape from problems in the world. Others find peace in it. I would like for are artist to give a lil bit more meaning to Music now days, you know … worry about something [laughs]

What role does technology play in your day-to-day life?
It plays the biggest part, because everything is on the computer now.What software, app or other technological innovation has made the biggest difference in your life and/or career?

How do you utilize it?
MacBook Pro and my iPhone are what I use the most; they are my life, can’t live without them.

Please define your personal brand.
My brand is the “HipHopSexShop” co-signed by alot of heavy weights in this game, including Mike Epps. The sound of my music is a fusion of hip-hop and real bedroom, baby-making music.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?
California, I love the women, weather, and the lifestyle of california its life changing.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
Laws

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Nothing at all.

What does it take to be iconic? In your estimation, who has achieved that status?
You have to be a work horse and create your own trends for the world to follow. I think it’s Michael Jackson, Kiss, Sting, Madonna, 2 pac, Sade, Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington, that’s just off the top of my head but there are many more icons.
