Kelly Rowland has been opening up about her life in ways that fans have never known as her deeply personal new single, “Dirty Laundry,” tells the shocking story of her years in an abusive relationship. Although Rowland has refused to reveal the identity of her abusive ex or share details about the abuse, she recently spoke with the Huffington Post about what she learned after surviving domestic violence.
While chatting with Marc Lamont Hill in an interview on “HuffPost Live,” Rowland, again, refused to go into detail about her dysfunctional relationship but she explained that she’s happy to share her story of survival with young women.
“It was really important for me to talk about it, or express to young girls that they don’t have to be in this kind of situation,” said Rowland.
Though the mistakes of Rowland’s past may be painful to hear about, she insists on using it as a lesson for young girls and urges them to trust their better judgment when it comes to their relationships.
“You can make better decisions. We need to listen to our instincts and our gut. That’s what I would probably tell myself then … Now I listen to [my gut]. The older you get, the more you’re like, “That’s what that was.” As soon as I see a red flag, I’m out.”
Hopefully, Rowland’s young fans will take her message to heart and know their true worth in the face of an abusive relationship. Check out some other stars that have shared their stories of domestic violence below. – nicholas robinson
