Johnny Depp continues to burnish his reputation for putting a quirky spin on the characters he portrays. In this latest adaptation of the Wild West tale about John Reid/The Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) and his sidekick, Tonto (Depp), we learn how Reid became the masked enigma. Told from Tonto’s point of view (finally), we also find out why justice is dispensed anonymously. But don’t let the title fool you, this is Tonto’s film all the way. And just as we always suspected, Tonto is the brains in the outfit. –p.d. lee
