No. 10 OutKast’s “Player’s Ball” debuts
Hip-hop had been dominated by the East Coast throughout the 1980s, with the West Coast gaining visibility towards the end of the decade and into the 1990s. But the South was viewed marginally, despite the success of acts like Arrested Development and the Geto Boys. That all changed in late 1993, when two teenagers from Atlanta released their debut single. OutKast laid the groundwork for Atlanta hip-hop’s mainstream ascendance later in the decade and cemented the South’s place in the national hip-hop conversation.
