Beyoncé’s tearjerking performance of “I Was Here”  has been nominated for a 2013 MTV VMA Award for “Best Video With A Social Message.” The Houston native first performed the ballad on World Humanitarian Day, August 19, 2012 and has garnered over 22 million views.

Written by Diane Warren, the song was spawned by the September 11 attacks. She played the song on a guitar over the phone for Beyoncé and Jay-Z. It gave Queen Bey chills and she reportedly responded,  “Oh my God; I have to have this song.” Receiving praise and criticism alike, the single appears on Beyoncé’s fourth studio album, 4.

She has performed “I Was Here” live at New York’s Roseland Ballroom (4 Intimate Night with Beyoncé) and it was played in a video montage  in Atlantic City, NJ (Revel Present: Beyoncé Live).

Watch it for yourself.
