Born Vaughn Nettles, the college senior argued with Wilson in front of the police station, according to witnesses, just before the attack took place.
Islan’s mother, Delores Nettles, tells media, “[Wilson] beat him and he knocked my baby on the floor … And he kept beating and beating and beating my baby.” Wilson was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault and released on a $2,000 bond on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013. Nettles was removed from life support the same day. Wilson’s charge will likely be upgraded to homicide and his case is under investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s hate crimes unit.
