Off the Wall — Many music fans, including this writer, call his “debut” solo album in 1979 the best of his career. It was a critical and commercial blockbuster album that was a seamless fusion of jazz, soul, rock and pop. Jackson penned the album’s first #1 hit, “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough,” as well as the infectious “Workin’ Day and Night,” though it was disco writer Rod Temperton (a man that Quincy Jones had to work hard to recruit) who wrote the album’s title track as well as its biggest hit “Rock with You.” Off the Wall has sold more than 20 million records and became the first LP to produce four Top Ten Billboard hits from the same album.
With this classic piece of art, Jackson became one of the few child superstars to make a successful transition into adulthood.
