Singer August Alsina allegedly refused to take a photo with a transgender fan

It’s certainly been a great year for change and progress for black LGBT artists in music but there’s still a lot of discrimination and phobias that plague the industry when it comes to gender and sexuality. That seems to have been the case, recently, when rising R&B singer August Alsina allegedly refused to take a photo with a fan after a show because she’s a transgender woman. An unnamed trans woman wrote an open letter to famous transgender blogger B. Scott and detailed the uncomfortable incident with the “I Luve This S—” singer while seeking advice on how to deal with it. “I went to a concert last night for August Alsina. Before the concert there was a VIP meet and greet which should have consisted of meeting August, receiving a poster, getting an autograph, and a picture,” writes the woman. “Well, I am a transgender woman. When it was my time to meet him and get my pictures I was refused with the comment ‘we’re not doing pictures with you,’” she explained. The woman goes on to explain that she then tried to take a photo with her camera phone and that’s when she alleges that August’s team then got physical with her. “Not wanting to cause a scene, I pulled my camera phone to take my own pictures,” she wrote. “Another guy literally snatched my phone out of my hand so that I was not able to take any pictures!” She continued, “I didn’t get a poster or an autograph and he acted like he couldn’t even say hello to me. Now first of all I paid my money just like everyone else. So it shouldn’t have mattered what “type” of person I am. You don’t treat people that way especially when they are trying to be supportive.” Well, if this is true, then it’s quite the unfortunate situation for August. In the end, a fan is a fan, regardless of gender and not reciprocating their support is just the same as biting the hand that feeds you. Hopefully, August will eventually learn to accept and support his fans as is.
