If you haven’t heard of Dena Burton, you’ve likely seen her designs on some of the industries most fashionable women. But the cool thing about her designs is that they work for the “everyday woman” as well. Dena, a graduate of Howard University has been creating beautiful fashion for nearly a decade now. She recently launched her Dena Burton Collection (DBC) Spring/Summer 2014 at Driven By Design L.A.

Rolling out had the privilege of sitting down with Dena to talk, inspiration, how she got started and words of advice for individuals interested in a career in fashion design;

What was your inspiration for this collection?

The Dena Burton Collection S/S 2014 is for the sexy, smart and carefree trendsetter doing things differently. While the DBC woman is serious about business and works hard, she plays even harder. Although the summer breeze whisks her across the globe she doesn’t hesitate to fill her days with shopping boutiques in The French Riviera, gondola rides in Italy, the beaches of St Tropez and evening yacht mixers in Nice, France. With DBC’s twill, lycra and chiffon fabrics paired with chic designs to keep her cool, its effortless to move from day to evening. DBC’s interchangeable designs makes it the only time when mixing business with pleasure is a brilliant move.

How did you get started in the fashion business?
After I completed my studies at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising aka FIDM, I had the opportunity to intern for several companies which gave me the ability to determine exactly which facet of the industry I wanted to be involved in. It was at that time I knew for certain I wanted to do design.

My next step was to build my studio from scratch because working out of my home was no longer an option. As I continued to hone my craft, the clients began to pour in. Trunk shows, trade shows and fashion shows like Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Miami Swim and San Francisco Fashion week became the next step for growth.

That’s pretty much how I got started but the beauty of this industry is that everyones road to success is different. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that this road has been easy, but what I will say is when you have a passion for something, you do whatever it takes to make your dream become a reality. The reality is that your gifts and talents will make room for you! I have been blessed to dress The First Lady of Calabar in Nigeria as well as having been flown across the country to participate in various charity events.

What advice do you offer to others considering a career in fashion?

The first thing I would say is to educate yourself about the industry. Being knowledgeable of what is happening in the industry and networking with others is a must. Secondly, get to know the history of designers who have been in the industry for a long time. There are lessons to be learned by those who have paved the way and experienced things you have yet to experience. Lastly, be certain to hone your craft and make a plan. Planning is imperative because it helps to keep you on track for your success.
