Racial profiling continues to be a major issue in America. According to the NY Daily News, Trayon Christian, 19, was racially profiled and arrested after he purchased a $350 belt from Barney’s on Madison Avenue in New York.

While shopping at Barney’s, Christian, a college student at NYC College of Technology, decided to purchase a belt for $350. He had recently been paid for his work-study job and wanted to treat himself to a new clothing item. He purchased the belt with his debit card and showed his I.D.

However, the clerk called the police on Christian shortly after he left the store. Two police officers followed him out of the store and arrested him on suspicion of identity theft. Christian was taken to the police station and held for two hours.

Christian was humiliated by the incident and returned the belt to Barney’s and got his money back. He is currently suing Barney’s and claiming the organization participated in racial discrimination.
