Citizens of Nairobi, Kenya, are outraged over a gang rape of a teenage girl and are seeking justice. According to the Agence-France Press, a 16-year-old girl was approached by six men after walking home from her grandfather’s funeral.
The men gang-raped her and threw her into a pit after the attack. The girl’s back was broken and she was confined to a wheelchair. The teen victim was only able to identify three of the six attackers.
However, once the police arrested the men, they did not prosecute them and only made them cut grass at the police station as a punishment. Once the task was completed, the men were allowed to go home.
Hundreds of demonstrators in Nairobi have marched through the streets with the hopes of forcing the police to give more severe punishments to the attackers. They also want the arresting police to be held accountable for their actions.
An online petition called “Justice for Liz” has generated over 1.2 million signatures. Protestors have also raised awareness on social media by creating the hashtag #Justice4Liz.
