Concert review: James Blake at Terminal 5 in New York City

James Blake Concert

James Blake, an electronic music producer and singer/songwriter from London, graced the stage of Terminal 5 for what turned out to be an extraordinary musical experience. Blake, who has won the 2013 Mercury Prize for his album Overgrown, has built up quite a following in the United States. Most notably, his song “Retrograde” was featured in the Showtime series “Master of Sex.” In addition to making evocative ballads, Blake goes by the name Harmonimix.

Sporting long bangs and a simple t-shirt, Blake walked to his seat behind his instruments, thanked the crowd and proceeded with a two hour performance that was utterly gratifying. The combinations of lights and pulsating electronic beats masterfully combined by the European crooner made for a multi-sensory show worth repeating.

The raw emotion in the venue seemed to sweep over the crowd in a calming haze, as the bass pumped and the lights flashed, rocking the crowd in unison.

When Blake ended the show, the crowd roared and clapped, luring Blake out for one more song.
