A Los Angeles man was arrested for stealing a part of the Porsche Carrera GT that actor Paul Walker and the driver died in during a fiery car crash last weekend.
Jameson Witty, 18, was taken into custody by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies after investigators traced the posting of the photo of the red T-top panel to his home. He showed off his souvenir on his Instagram and Twitter accounts. He is being held on $20,000 bond.
The car part was blown off the car during the violent collision when financier and car enthusiast Roger Rodas, 38, lost control of the Porsche and slammed into a pole, igniting the car fire. Both Rodas and Walker, 40, were burned beyond recognition.
Witty, according to police, used his Instagram account to boast how he and a fellow friend snatched the T-top off a tow truck. The two reportedly followed the tow truck from the scene of the crash. When the truck stopped at a red light, one of the two suspects got out of the car, according to witnesses, grabbed the T-top, then drove away.
Police tracked Witty to his Los Angeles home where they found the T-top that matched the one taken from Walker’s death car. It also matched the part that Witty posted on his social media accounts.
Witty was arrested Thursday. His friend, who is not from California, is reportedly arranging his official surrender, according to the Associated Press.
Both suspects will be charged with felony grand theft and tampering with evidence.
Walker and the rest of the crew were on Thanksgiving break from filming Fast & Furious 7 in Atlanta. Walker has appeared in all but one of the popular Fast & Furious franchise films. Film production is on hold indefinitely and there is no word on when or if production will resume.
