During World War II, Adolf Hitler’s Nazis stole thousands of priceless works of art from private owners and museums across Europe. To stem the losses, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered that a special platoon be put together to recover the stolen art and to move many other artifacts out of harm’s way before they could be destroyed or stolen. The Monuments Men tells the true story of the brave men who risked life and limb to accomplish the seemingly impossible task. And they weren’t soldiers, which makes it all the more amazing; they were art historians, and museum directors and curators.
