Music legend and social activist Stevie Wonder attended the NAACP Image Awards this past weekend accompanied by his sons. Wonder stood proudly, holding the shoulders of one of his sons. “I’m excited to have them here. Obviously when I touch my little children, I think of the lives of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis and I think that they were young boys too. We have to protect our children. As Americans, of all ethnicities, we have to put an end to the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law in the states they are in,” he said.
“For us to have done the incredible things that we’ve done and them not to acknowledge it would be absurd. For those of us who know of those contributions, we must come together to celebrate them,” said Wonder about why it was important for him to attend the Image Awards.
The NAACP Image Awards were instituted to honor the accomplishments of people of color in the realms of television, music, art and film. In addition to recognizing individuals in the entertainment field, the NAACP Image Awards honors those who have made significant strides in improving the quality of life in their communities.
The award show aired on Tv One network on Feb. 22 and was attended by everyone from Oprah to this year’s “it” girl, Lupita Nyong’o. Among those honored were Nelson Mandela; Kevin Hart, who took home the award for Entertainer of the Year; and the critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave won Outstanding Picture.
