Georgia House lawmakers have passed of a limited medical marijuana bill. House Bill 885 allows the usage and production of a special strain of marijuana called “Charlotte’s Web.” This strain of pot was made famous on a CNN report with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. The medical evidence was undeniable pot was helping sick children. The oil from the plant is extracted for use and has miraculous success among child patients. Charlotte’s Web is used to treat patients who have a rare seizure disorder that often leaves them depilated and some confined to wheelchairs. Children who suffer from this particular disorder often suffer up to 100 seizures per day.
The Seeing the faces and hearing the stories of children who are suffering is one of the reasons that this bill passed with a vote of 171-4. Republican state representative Allen Peake with bi-partisan support surprisingly sponsored the bill. One of the co-sponsors of the bill is African-American legislator Nikki T. Randall who stated passing the bill was “A chance worth taking… If we can offer the slightest rise, the slightest improvement in the quality of life for these children, these families, I think we’re doing the right thing,”
The oil will be produced in Georgia and only by five research Universities one of which is Atlanta’s Emory University. Many Georgia legislators reinforced their previous opposition to the recreational use of pot during the passage of this bill.
