After nearly a decade of laying low, Dave Chappelle resurfaces to claim his title as Hollywood’s favorite funnyman. Recently, the comedian announced that he will perform for the first time in New York City in 10 years at Radio City Music Hall on June 19.
In 2005, Chappelle parted ways with Comedy Central’s “Chappelle’s Show” and his huge fan following. The sketch show creator was pretty much missing in action until last fall, when he kicked off his comeback by co-headlining the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival with Flight of the Concords. The festival was a huge hit with over 14 dates and an average ticket sale price of $138.
Due to the festival’s rave reviews from fans and critics, Chappelle embarked on a headlining tour through Australia in February, where he performed to sold out crowds in several of the country’s major cities including Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.
While Chappelle has had overwhelming success overseas, we have to ask, can we expect a similar demand for the 40-year-old funnyman in the states? Will Chappelle be able to compete with Kevin Hart, who is cleaning up in all aspects of comedy from stand-up to movies to producing his very own TV spoof? Let the sales speak for themselves.
