Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez has died. Reps for the Colombian novelist confirm that he died Thursday, April 17 at his home in Mexico City. The scribe was previously hospitalized for infections in his lungs and urinary tract. He was 87.

His works, which outsold everything published in Spanish except the Bible, include Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Love in the Time of Cholera and Autumn of the Patriarch. Márquez was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982.

“The world has lost one of its greatest visionary writers — and one of my favorites from the time I was young,” President Obama expressed in a statement to the press.
