When it comes to LGBT equality, no other sport has been more supportive this week than the world of professional wrestling. Earlier this week, the WWE partnered with the famous NOH8 campaign for a major series of photos in support of marriage equality. Now, one of wrestling’s biggest legends, Stone Cold Steve Austin, is weighing in on the matter and recently blasted homophobes for opposing same-sex marriage.
According to Deadspin, Austin made his pro-gay marriage comments during a recent podcast, saying that all humans should have the right to love and marry whomever they want.
“I don’t give a s— if two guys, two gals, guy-gal, whatever it is, I believe that any human being in America, or any human being in the world, that wants to be married, and if it’s same-sex, more power to ’em,” said Austin.
Austin then turned his attention to bigots and homophobes, saying that institutions like churches are morally wrong and hypocritical for spewing hate towards the LGBT community.
“What also chaps my a–, some of these churches, have the high horse that they get on and say ‘we as a church do not believe in that.’ Which one of these mother—–s talked to God, and God said that same-sex marriage was a no-can-do?”
“OK, so two cats can’t get married if they want to get married, but then a guy can go murder 14 people, molest five kids, then go to f—— prison, and accept God and he’s going to let him into heaven? After the fact that he did all that s—? See that’s all horses— to me, that don’t jive with me,” Austin added.
Well, it certainly is a big deal that someone as stereotypically macho like Austin would lend his voice to the fight for LGBT equality. Wrestling stars across the board are fighting against the sports world’s homophobic past and are working towards equal rights for all. – nicholas robinson
