Super Bowl champion Derrick Ward didn’t agree with ESPN’s choice to show Michael Sam kiss his boyfriend after being drafted by the St. Louis Rams.
Ward, who played for the New York Giants and Houston Texans, voiced his displeasure on Twitter by posting, “Man u[sic] got little kids looking at the draft. I can’t believe ESPN even allowed that to happen.”
Ward received some backlash and support after the Tweet. Some called Ward homophobic and others agreed with his disgust of the public show of affection. He later posted that he would block any person who reached out to him and argued in Sam’s favor.
Ward continued by posting, “The pairing your tongue into the other persons mouth is a little over board. But people seen that as on I’m bashing him because he’s gay. Who cares!”
ESPN’s Stuart Scott asked Ward on Twitter if he would disagree with ESPN if Sam kissed a woman instead of a man. Ward replied that he didn’t like the way it was done. Sam and his boyfriend have cake on their face as they kiss.
Sam’s kiss created a stir on social media and he garnered exposure that’s unusual for a 7th round draft pick.
The NFL fined defensive back Don Jones who tweeted, “Horrible” after Sam’s kiss was shown. Jones has since apologized for the tweet.
The NFL can’t fine Ward because he’s no longer in the league.
