The Police Department of Baytown, Texas, has sparked outrage over the brutal beating of a Hispanic family last weekend. Dozens of people took to the street this past Sunday to protest the event, which occurred on May 3, 2014. According to family members and eyewitnesses, the family was simply having a birthday party, watching the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight and playing music.
Someone in the neighborhood called 911 and when the police arrived the scene was chaotic.
“They were calling us wetbacks and they were just shouting at everybody,” stated partygoer Erica Clarke, who was arrested.
Fortunately, there was cellphone footage of the scene and police are seen on the video using tasers, pepper spray and brute force on the men, women, at least 10 children and the elderly. Within minutes of entering a closed backyard gate, police used tasers on at least seven people. When one non-English speaking grandmother did not move, she was tased four times and kicked out of her lawn chair by a female officer.
Quanell X, New Black Panther Nation and New Black Muslims leader was contacted by the family for assistance in their complaint against the police. According to Bro. Quanell X, “The city of Baytown police department has a notorious history of violating human and civil rights of Mexicans and blacks. What are the citizens to do if they are being beaten, being pepper sprayed for committing no crimes at all?”
Seven people were arrested for “interfering with a public servant.”
The Baytown Police Department was contacted by rolling out but a public information officer was not available.
