From the outside looking in, it would seem that Michael Sam’s meteoric rise to fame and success was simply written in the stars. After signing his first major endorsement deal with Visa, Sam recently landed the biggest deal of all: a contract with the St. Louis Rams, making him the first openly gay player to be drafted by the NFL. Although fans have gotten glimpses of Sam’s personal journey on his way to superstardom, they’re about to get full access into his life because Sam recently signed a deal with OWN to star in a docuseries.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the docuseries will follow Sam’s life as he works to earn his spot on the Rams. The docuseries will be helmed by Craig Piligian and director Amy Rice, who were responsible for Lindsay Lohan’s OWN docuseries, “Lindsay.”
Oprah Winfrey released a statement about the new docuseries, saying that she’s happy to document such a groundbreaking moment in history, as well as in Sam’s life.
“We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever,” said Winfrey. “I am proud of the focus on authentic storytelling in our new documentary series format. The next real-life story we follow in ‘The Untitled Michael Sam Project’ promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here.”
Sam also opened up about the new docuseries and explained that, although his focus right now is on the NFL, he hopes the series can help other LGBT youth come to terms with their sexuality and find the belief within to chase their dreams.
“Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability,” said Sam. “I am determined. And if seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great. I am thankful to Oprah for her support and excited to work together.”
We’re happy for Sam and all of his accomplishments over the year and we hope his docuseries is as much of a success as everything else going on in his life. –nicholas robinson
