It’s a tacky way to make a political statement if that was the intention of Spencer Smith, a history teacher at Heritage High School, Brentwood, Calif., who dressed as Trayvon Martin for a yearbook photo.
Wearing a hoodie and holding up a package of Skittles, Smith thought he was making a political statement by dressing at the late teen who was killed in February 2012 for walking in a white Florida neighborhood while black. His white murderer was acquitted Summer 2013.
Alfreda Charway, the high school’s Black Student Union president, tells media “a good idea because he’s expressing himself. Because that’s the whole point of yearbook pictures, you’re supposed to express yourself.”
He’s definitely aiming to be on the wrong side of history with this stunt. If he weren’t chucking deuces, his point would be well taken by this writer.
