Meriam Ibrahim, 27, has been in jail for eight months at The Omdurman Women’s Jail in Khartoum where she spends many days and nights shackled to the floor. Awaiting execution, she’s been jailed for refusing to renounce Christianity. Her hanging has been scheduled.
She married U.S. citizen, Daniel Wani, and converted from Islam to Christianity.
Ibrahim was forced to give birth to her baby girl, Maya, five days early in the barbaric Sudanese jail. Initially, Wani was not allowed to visit his wife, but has been granted access while accompanied by a lawyer.
The U.K., the U.S. and the Netherlands governments expressed concern for her safety and started a petition calling for Ibrahim’s release, which has secured 650,000 signatures. A U.S.-based campaign group, Justice Centre Sudan, has been paying for her lawyers.
Human Rights Watch reports the prison is “beset with overcrowding” and has “poor sanitation, disease and the deaths of many children living with their mothers.”
The couple also hasa 20-month-old son named Martin whom the Sudanese government refuses to release to the custody of Wani because he is Christian and was born in the U.S.
