Derek Fisher was recently named the new head coach of the New York Knicks. Fisher was hired by his former coach, Phil Jackson, who has taken over as president of the Knicks.
But while Fisher is likely happy to find employment less than one month after playing his final NBA game, he is stepping into a sticky situation.
Here are three things his must do as New York Knicks’ new head coach.
Convince Carmelo Anthony to stay
The Knicks only won 37 games this season and missed the playoffs. Carmelo Anthony just turned 30 and only has a few years left as a prime player. Anthony will consider leaving the Knicks to join another NBA All-Star with the hopes of winning a championship. Fisher has to convince Melo to stay in the big city.
Win immediately
New York media and fans have always been unforgiving. Fisher must win immediately or he will face backlash from media and fans who will want Phil Jackson as head coach.
Hope for a miracle trade
The Knicks are a terrible team at the moment. They don’t have a first round draft pick this year and they aren’t flexible when it comes to cap space. Fisher can only hope that Phil Jackson is able to pull off a miracle trade to add needed value or decrease cap spending.
