Mayor-Elect Ras J. Baraka will take the oath of office as Newark’s seventh chief executive Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at noon EST. At the ceremony, newly elected Newark Municipal Council Members will take oaths of office for their four-year terms as well, and will elect a Municipal Council President. The ceremony will take place downtown at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 1 Center St., Newark, New Jersey 07102. Former Governor and New Jersey Senator Richard J. Codey will administer the oaths of office to Newark’s new administration.
On July 1, Baraka will become the seventh mayor of Newark under the City’s 1954 Charter, and the 40th mayor of Newark since the City’s incorporation in 1836.
The ceremony will take place rain or shine and is open to the public, but seating will be limited. There will be public standing space, also. The public must obtain a ticket to attend the ceremony. Free tickets will be distributed on a “first-come, first-served” basis at NJPAC’s box office and may be picked up Wednesday, June 25 from noon until 6:00 p.m; one ticket per person.
Baraka is the son of late poet Amiri Baraka.
