For more than 20 years, Syleena Johnson has been a staple in R&B music. After releasing seven albums, Johnson is preparing for a new project titled Chapter 6: Couples Therapy.
Johnson is also delving into reality TV with appearances on TV One’s “R&B Divas.” During a recent interview with rolling out, Johnson discussed her new album, reality TV and Kanye West.
You are currently working on a new album. Describe the process of creating a new work.
Creating an album is a tedious process because I put everything that I have into an album. I haven’t released an album since 2011. I was able to work with R. Kelly and other top producers on this new album. Chapters are appropriate because we live our lives in chapters. We are different people and come into different circumstances in our life. That was the best way for me to relate to fans.
What are the pros and cons of being on a reality TV show?
Being on reality TV has changed an aspect of my life. The privacy level is breached, but the pros outweigh the cons. Reality TV is an avenue for today’s recording artists to increase awareness for their brands.
You worked with Kanye West on his College Dropout album. How has he changed since that project?
College Dropout was the most pure and authentic Kanye at the time. As an artist, he was untainted. People always want you to go back to the original. I’m watching him grow and paying attention to why the music is changing. Some artists are manufactured; Kanye is not.
What are your thoughts on the South City Summer Music Festival?
I’m excited. I haven’t done a live show in the Atlanta area in a long time. I’m exited to be on the same stage as Klymaxx and Angela Winbush. She is like my godmother. I adore Avery Sunshine. It will be another great showcase of R&B.
