Multitalented vocalist Tasha Page-Lockhart is the season six winner of BET’s “Sunday Best,” the gospel singing competition executive produced by Kirk Franklin. She holds the distinction of having received the most votes of any previous winner. The Detroit-based singer and songwriter is the daughter of legendary gospel singer Lisa Page Brooks of the female group Witness and the first female act signed to Fo Yo Soul Recordings / RCA. “I couldn’t be more proud to present Tasha as the first female artist on my new label,” says Kirk Franklin. “Tasha has a powerful story, and her lifestyle matches her music.”
We caught up with Page-Lockhart to talk about her debut album Here Right Now, and her experience on BET’s “Sunday Best.”
Who was your musical idol and why?
I’d have to say my mom, Lisa Page Brooks. And I don’t just say that because she is my mom. I actually don’t even look at her as an idol; she is my greatest inspiration in music. The greatest example of longevity and elegance I could ever have.
Pretend you’re in a group with four other artists any genre … who’s in the group with you?
Oh I want an eclectic group. You ready for this? I’m going to go with John Mayer, Pink, Oleta Adams, and John Legend.
Name one song that you wish you wrote?
Dionne Warwick’s “That’s What Friends Are For.” It’s such a beautiful song with a sweet sentiment. It’s one of my absolute favorites.
What’s the best thing about being a artist?
I love the fact that I am able to touch and even change the lives of so many others simply by sharing my testimony. It’s truly an honor to be in this position.
What’s the worst thing about being an artist?
Oh that’s an easy one; being away from my children.
Talk about your experience on “Sunday Best”?
It was an experience that has forever changed my life. To think … out of 15,000 people, I was the one left standing. It’s truly humbling. I didn’t think I was even good enough to compete.
Tell me about your album Here Right Now?
My debut album, Here Right Now, is on Fo Yo Soul/RCA Records, produced by Kirk Franklin. Guests on the album include my mother, Lisa Page Brooks, the wonderful P.J. Morton, and of course the aforementioned Kirk Franklin. It’s available in stores and online everywhere right now. There is a little bit of something for everyone on this project.
What’s it like working closely with a legend like Kirk Franklin? Do you feel any added pressure?
I absolutely felt some pressure. Kirk is a legend after all. I think when you get a chance to work with someone of his caliber you can’t help but to feel a bit of pressure but he made me feel comfortable, and I learned so much from him!
How do you use social media to your advantage?
I try to remain consistent with my social media and make sure that I stay in communication with my supporters. I try to make them feel like family because I really believe that we are family when it’s all said and done.
