Another black man has been killed by police in a senseless act of violence. According to Desert Times, Darrien Hunt, 22, was approached by police in Saratoga Springs, Utah, after they got calls that he was holding a samurai sword.
However, witnesses and Hunt’s family say that it was a toy sword with a round edge. Police reported that Hunt lunged at them when he was shot. But eyewitnesses say Hunt was running from police.
Hunt’s family hired an attorney who had an independent autopsy performed. The autopsy revealed that Hunt was shot six times in the back.
Hunt’s mother, Susan, who is white, said that her son was shot because he was black. She also told reporters that a white boy holding a toy sword and running away would have never been shot.
Hunt is the fourth non-threatening black man to be killed by police in the past three months. The ongoing police violence against black people should lead to the implementation of a federal law that would make every police jurisdiction undergo diversity training before they are allowed to carry a gun and a badge.
The two officers who killed Hunt have not been identified and are currently on paid leave as the investigation continues.
