Grammy nominated gospel artist James Fortune was recently arrested and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly striking his wife with a barstool.
Fortune’s wife, Cheryl is said to have suffered a possible fractured leg and pelvis in the attack.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time Fortune has been in trouble with the law because of his temper. He was previously sentenced to six years of deferred adjudication for using scolding hot water to punish his then 4-year-old stepson.
Attorney Toni Jones, who represents Roger Davenport, the biological father of James’ stepson is concerned that Fortune’s violent tendencies could lead to further tragedy if counseling isn’t sought.
“The most serious thing that could happen, and we’ve seen this happen before, is Mrs. Fortune or those children could end up dead,” said Jones.
Fortune and his wife have 3 additional children together.
After being released on $20,00 bond Fortune released the following statement:
I am truly sorry for the negative attention this situation has brought my wife, family, friends and business partners. Because it is a pending legal matter, I cannot comment on what has been reported. However, I understand the seriousness of this matter and ask that you respect the privacy of my family as we address this together. I would also like to thank my fans for their continued outpouring of love and support.
Fortune faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
