Demario Bailey was murdered days before his 16th birthday. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Bailey and his brother were approached by four teens who killed him after attempting to take his coat.

On Dec. 20, Bailey was laid to rest and his mother, Delores Bailey, had powerful words for his killers and attendees of her son’s home going service at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago.

“To the boys that took my babies, I’m sorry. I wish I would have had a chance to love on y’all,” Delores Bailey said. “I’m sorry that you all got to spend the rest of your life in prison because your mama didn’t love on you. And you can say that mamas ain’t got nothing to do with it. The devil is a liar. Because if you love them, they wouldn’t pick up no gun and blow out nobody’s brains.”

Delores Bailey’s powerful speech continued to preach the message of love so that our children will reflect that behavior. “Today, I ask of you all to live and not die for my son,” she said. “The way you can do that is to just love all your babies. You all want to change the world? Your kids are the world. It starts with them.”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was also in attendance and spoke. Emanuel’s son was robbed outside of his family’s home on the night before the funeral.

He urged the city to come together and do better to stop crime and violence in Chicago.

The teens who killed Demario Bailey will be charged as adults and could spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
