There’s no denying that Pharrell Williams had a remarkable 2014.
In addition to numerous successful collaborations and a well-received run as a judge on NBC’s “The Voice,” the N.E.R.D. leader released his infectious single “Happy” and even netted an Oscar nod.
But for all of his hits during the year, in a recent interview with GQ, Pharrell tells the magazine there was one miss that just didn’t sit well with him.
“I wasn’t happy about the T.I. situation,” he said referencing T.I.’s Paperwork album, for which he served as executive producer. “They did that record hoping for radio play, and they got nothing out of it. … Great, you got your No. 1 hip-hop song. But what does that do for your sales?”
Along with his executive producer credit, Williams also produced four songs on the album: “Light ‘Em Up,” “G S—,” “Oh Yeah,” and the title track.
Paperwork sold 80,000 copies in its first week to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B album chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Sales quickly plummeted, however, and have stalled at less than 200,000 units sold.
