Deasia Watkins, 20, of College Hill, Ohio, was arrested for aggravated murder on Monday after she brutally decapitated her 3-month-old daughter. Baby Janiah’s head was severed when law enforcement arrived at the scene. Watkins, who is under mental evaluation at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, was found with the dead infant early in the morning.
The Cincinnati Police Department Homicide Unit and the coroner’s office are investigating.
“We’re going to go over the evidence that we have, and try and make sense of this murder which, seems to us, is very senseless,” Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco, Hamilton County Coroner tells the media. “We’re trying to do right by this child. We need to bring some justice for this baby.”
Hamilton County Job and Family Services had recently removed baby Janiah from Watkins’ care.
