J. Cole’s impressive 2015 just keeps getting better.
Not only can he celebrate his latest album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, being a critically acclaimed platinum smash, the first rap album with no guest appearances to achieve that feat since 1989, but the “Apparently” rapper can now proudly call himself a college graduate.
Last week St. John’s University presented the German-born, North Carolina-based rapper with his degree after a lengthy delay for a pretty funny reason.
“I owed money for a library book that I didn’t turn in,” Cole said. “If you have any outstanding fees, that translates to money. There’s a price associated with it. I never paid. That’s why I didn’t have my degree.”
Cole actually graduated summa cum laude with an 3.8 GPA in 2007 but never received his degree because of the technicality. Now that he’s been awarded the degree, he says he knows exactly what he’ll do with it.
“I’m gonna send it to my mom,” he says.
