Jameison Winston was drafted as the top player in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Tampa Bay Bucs chose Winston over Marcus Mariota who was selected by the Tennessee Titans.

Since the first NFL Draft in 1936, only three other Black quarterbacks have been selected with the top pick. Unfortunately, the record for Black quarterbacks selected No. 1 overall has been marred by bad play and off the field issues. Michael Vick was the first Black quarterback to go No.1 and shined in his first years as a pro. However, his dogfighting scandal caused him to miss his prime years and he never reached his full potential.

JaMarcus Russell was selected by the Oakland Raiders in 2007, but he never managed to piece together an adequate pro career and is no longer in the NFL.

Cam Newton was selected by the Carolina Panthers in 2011 and has managed to keep his team in the mix as playoff contenders.

Winston will have to work to mature as an NFL pro. He faced a slew of problems while at FSU and some questioned if he was worthy of being selected with the top pick.
